BOMCO ON THE MOVE

Bomco marks the first half of 2008 with significant advances
on all fronts, including the promotion of key people, advances in
technical support and the addition of new equipment. Early in the
year, Paul Hubbard, previously manager of engineering, was
promoted to vice president of the corporation. Patricia O'Neill was
promoted to the new position of office manager. As experienced
and long term employees, both Hubbard and O'Neill will continue
to make contributions that benefit both Bomco and our customers.

In evaluating the first six months of the year, Bomco president Mike McCarthy commented "to take advantage of the general growth of our customers as well as the specific growth of their new products, we must continue the technical training of our people, provide additional technical support and acquire new equipment and support capabilities." The technical training of new people is being provided in part by the E Team Machining Program, a statesupported plan in Lynn, MA. Six recent graduates of the E Team Program are now providing excellent technical support to various manufacturing operations throughout the plant. |
In a parallel move to provide training for new engineers, Bomco
has established a pilot apprenticeship program in engineering.
The first member, Philip Corey, is a 2007 graduate of Norwich
University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical
Engineering. Corey is gaining manufacturing experience as an
operator of Bomco's new 6-axis laser cutting center, the Trumpf
TLC 1000 Hybrid. (See adjoining article and photo). While it is
too early to evaluate this apprenticeship program, engineering VP
Paul Hubbard explains, "we are very optimistic about this program
because we can groom well qualified young engineers in the
intricacies of our unique tool design techniques and precision
manufacturing practices."
As Bomco's customers become more progressive and sophisticated, so must Bomco with programs for continual improvement, increased tool making capabilities, training programs and new equipment. As Mike McCarthy, president, explains "we are working on many fronts at the same time and always striving to improve our service and overall capabilities." |

Bomco has recently added a new 6-axis laser cutting center, the
Trumpf TLC Hybrid, to its production line. This 2000 watt CO2
laser cutting center permits open access to the work table from all
sides and allows superior accessibility for part loading and
unloading as well as new job set up.
The working envelope provides an x-axis travel of 120 in., the y-axis 80 in., the z-axis 30 in., and a rotary axis swing of 100 in. diameter. The flexibility of this configuration coupled with a state of the art Siemens control permits quick set-up, short new part trials, high cut quality, less refinishing work and greater production efficiency for Bomco's customers. |

planning, plant restructuring and expansion, and the cultivation of
new customer relationships.
“There is no question about it,”
explains President McCarthy,
“Paul is playing a key role on our
management team and will help to
direct our future.”
Hubbard will continue to head the company’s engineering department where he directs a team of engineers and is responsible for inspection technology, new equipment acquisition, plant layout and technology development. Having worked at Bomco as a draftsman during high school, Hubbard later joined the engineering department where he progressed from tool designer to manufacturing engineer, to chief manufacturing engineer, to department manager and now to vice president. A twenty-four year Bomco veteran, Hubbard graduated from Gloucester High School, studied design principles at Wentworth Institute of Technology and attended numerous professional seminars and courses. Hubbard lives with his daughter in his native city of Gloucester. |
