F-35 Fighter Uses
Precision Made Turbine
Exhaust Case Shield

F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Gloucester, MA. January 15, 2004. The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) uses a precision-made turbine exhaust case shield, known as a "bulge seal" that is produced with great accuracy and controlled costs. According to the bulge seal supplier, Bomco, Inc., Gloucester, MA (www.bomco.com) the exhaust case shield is manufactured using feature-based parametric modeling, CNC lathe and milling operations, triple-acting hydraulic press, muli-axis laser trimming and precipitation hardening.

This exhaust case shield is typical of complex metal-formed products that Bomco manufactures for demanding commercial and military applications requiring faster start-up, greater accuracy and controlled costs.

The exhaust case shield has a diameter of 20 in., a height of 3 in. and a thickness of .050 in. The material is AMS 5596, and the shield is delivered in a hardened condition.

The F-35 JSF will be produced in three versions: one for the Air Force, a carrier version for the Navy and a vertical landing model for the Marines. The first flight of the F-35 JSF is scheduled in 2005 and production is planned in 2006.

Bomco, Inc. is an ISO 9001:2000/AS 9100A registered company producing precision metal-formed products for aerospace, computer, electronic, medical consumer, nuclear and other original equipment manufacturers.
Bomco Grieves The Loss of John Remeika

Bomco Grieves
The Loss of
John Remeika

John A. Remeika, Bomco’s Purchasing Manager for the past 25 years and employee for almost 40 years, died at home with his family at his side on February 11, 2004 after a brief illness. “Johnny,” as he was called by close friends and co-workers, was almost an institution at Bomco. His multi-faceted career included work as a machinist in his early years, promotion to foreman, then engineering duties and culminated as Purchasing Manager. His trademark was the quiet and efficient manner in which he handled virtually everything from major delivery crises to daily challenges. With an in-depth knowledge of all Bomco’s operations and a calming approach to major problems, John was able to instill confidence in others that the job could indeed be done. And it was, thanks, in many respects, to “Johnny.”

A long time resident of Gloucester, John was an active member and officer of the Elks Lodge and a member of the Bass Rocks Golf Club where he served as a member of the Board of Governors. He is survived by his wife Kathleen, a son, a daughter, two stepdaughters and five grandchildren.

A friend and co-worker for almost 40 years, Joe Cordaro, Plant Manager, caringly speaks for everyone who knew John. “He was a real gentleman... How he loved his family... always willing to help in the community... we are all going to miss him dearly.”

Bomco Promotes Alves, Gilbo and Hubbard to Head Key Departments

Continuing the practice of promoting from within the company, president Pete Banks has announced the promotions of three new department heads. Due to the very sad and untimely death of John Remeika, Arthur Alves has been named Pu rchasing Manager. Formerly Engineering Manager, Alves brings a wealth of experience to his new position that assures both continuity and productivity.

In a similarly efficient move, Paul Hubbard has been promoted to the newly vacated position of Engineering Manager. Hubbard, part of the Engineering Department since 1982, is particularly well suited to assume this responsibility.

With the recent departure of Walter Fredrick to pursue other interests, Paula Gilbo has been promoted to the position of Quality Control Manager. Formerly a Quality Specialist, Gilbo has also been named the ISO 9000 Management Representative for the company. In an associated move, Christopher MacDonald has been promoted to the position of Quality Specialist.

With all three new department heads well-known and well respected by customers and fellow employees alike, President Pete Banks expects a smooth transition and the continuity associated with promotions from within. As Pete Banks said, “please join me in wishing all four employees every success in their new positions.”
